Each month at Edwin, we explore a different wine region, with tastings from a different winemaker each week. In February, our region of choice is Beechworth, and we look forward to giving you the opportunity to get a taste of the region.

The mineral rich hills around Beechworth are home to some of Victoria’s best loved vineyards. Tended by wine growing families with a fierce independence and a passion for making the best possible artisanal wines, Beechworth is a refined wine region, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the standout drops of the region. Geographically defined as a hillside wine growing region, with granite, shale and slate gravelly slopes contributing to the concentrated, intense wines produced in this area. Innovation is celebrated by the makers of this region, with local vignerons experimenting with unusual varietals.

THURSDAY, 6 TH FEBRUARY – FIGHTING GULLY ROAD

Different Drop describes Fighting Gully Road wines as & delivering rare value for the region. They are powerful, complex and imbued with a sense of place. In a small region stacked
with some of the biggest names (and price-tags) in Australian wine, it’s nice to find a hidden gem.

Fighting Gully Road is certainly a gem, and we’re really excited to share their wines with you.

THURSDAY, 13 TH FEBRUARY – PENNYWEIGHT WINERY

Pennyweight was established by Stephen Newton Morris, great-grandson of GF Morris, founder of Morris Wines. The 4 hectares each of vines at Beechworth and Rutherglen are not irrigated and are biodynamically grown. The business is run by Stephen, together with his wife Elizabeth and assisted by their three sons.

THURSDAY, 20 TH FEBRUARY – VIGNERONS SCHMÖLZER & BROWN

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown is the wine and life partnership of Tessa Brown, winemaker and viticulturist & Jeremy Schmölzer, Architect. Their vineyard, Thorley, was planted in the highest altitude of the Beechworth region in 2014 and 2015, producing easy drinking wines such as Prêt-à-Blanc, Prêt-à-Rosé and Prêt-à-Rouge blends.

THURSDAY, 27 TH FEBRUARY – SENTIO

One of the Beechworth region’s most dynamic young winemakers, Chris Catlow crafts Burgundian-inspired wines that are truly impressive. He cites his philosophy as, “Handcrafted wines highlighting regional expression through unique single vineyards and consistent vinification techniques.”

Join us for our wine program each Thursday night, as we explore Victoria, one region at a time. Our wine program is completely free, and you don’t need prior wine knowledge to join
us. If you like wine? You’re welcome.

We believe that you should eat well, drink local and do good. And if you can manage to do all three at once? Even better.

For the months of December and January, we’re offering a glass of deeds not words sparkling rosé, served with a half-dozen fresh natural oysters, for just $30 from 3pm daily, with $5 from every bottle we pour going directly to Share the Dignity.

THE WINE:

The grapes may be fairly traditional, but the combination is refreshing: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay combine to bring you a refreshing, interesting drop.

THE NAME:

The famous phrase “deeds not words” was adopted by Emmeline Pankhurst as the slogan of the new women’s social and political union in turn of the 20th century Britain.

After fifty years of peaceful campaigning to secure women the right to vote had brought no change to women’s rights, it was time for action; ‘deeds’ such as stone-throwing, arson, window-breaking, and parliamentary deputations eventually succeeded and still inspire action in the pursuit of gender equity to this day.

Faced with a recent epidemic of violence against women in australia, it is important to consider the deeds or actions – however large or small – each of us can take towards making the world a safer, fairer place. Less talk, more action – deeds not words.

THE CHARITY:

Share the Dignity is a women’s charity making a real difference to homeless women and victims of domestic violence in Australia. Ensuring that all women are afforded the dignity so many of us take for granted, the work of Share the Dignity directly benefits women in crisis. And with a wine list that boasts a 50/50 split of male and female winemakers, it’s a cause close to our hearts.

To learn more or get involved visit sharethedignity.com.au

This special will run throughout December and January.

The Grampians wine region has been a quality wine-producing region for over 150 years, and is home to some of Australia’s oldest vines. Located against the backdrop of the magnificent Grampians mountain range is one of Australia’s most historical and acclaimed wine regions.

The region boasts a combination of both large and smaller boutique wineries, with a number of award-winning drops produced in the Grampians region. The region is particularly well suited to later ripening varieties, such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The first vineyards of the region were planted in 1867, and included grape varieties so rare that several have defied all attempts at identification. In all probability, these unidentifiable varieties are the sole surviving examples in the world.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THIS REGION?

Cabernet Sauvignon Often blended with Shiraz (as well as other varieties), Cabernet Sauvignon performs well in adverse conditions. Grampians Cabernet Sauvignon blends often include blackcurrant, blackberry and even raspberry flavours, which dominate without threatening the elegant style of the wine.

Riesling

In the cooler vintages, you’ll notice a reserved toasty style of Riesling, with a tropical lime juice aroma and flavour in the warmer years.

Shiraz

The style of Grampians Shiraz ranges from a concentrated wine with spice, pepper and liquorice, through to a silky wine with red cherry and plum flavours. The common thread throughout is a fine tannin and elegant structure.

Explore the Grampians region and neighbouring growing region Henty throughout November with our Wine Program. We’ll be exploring three of the region’s best throughout the month.

EDWIN’S WINE CLUB: In October, we’ll be exploring the wines of the Yarra Valley region, sampling some of the region’s finest each Thursday night.
BEST’S GREAT WESTERN

One of Australia’s oldest wineries, established in 1866, Best’s Great Western crafts extraordinary wines of elegance and longevity. With the winemaking philosophy that great wines are made in the vineyard, Best’s avoid the overpowering use of oak or additional treatments; instead, the team prefers to let the fantastic fruit from Great Western tell the story.

The property retains much of its original heritage with the original hand dug cellars and original Nursery Block still intact today. In fact, one of the vines planted in the Nursery Block has defied identification and is thought to exist nowhere else in the world.

All aspects of making the winemaking are handled on site at Best’s Great Western, allowing the winemakers to have full control over quality. Best’s wines strive to express the region fully through vines and vintage. The wines are exceptional, food-friendly, elegant and approachable. Join us for our Wine Program on Thursday the 7th November from 5pm- 7pm for a taste of Best’s.

HOCHKIRCH + TARRINGTON

With growing season temperatures similar to those in Burgundy, John and Jennifer Nagorcka have implemented a high-density planting pattern at Hochkirch, focusing on pinot noir, with lesser quantities of riesling, chardonnay, shiraz and semillon. The winery has seen a move to certified biodynamic viticulture and the vines are not irrigated.

At Tarrington Vineyards, the grape growing and winemaking practices are very similar to those you would find in the Burgundy region. Established in 1993, the team at Tarrington have taken their time to plant just two varieties (chardonnay and pinot noir), and there has been no rush to bring the vineyard into production.

Tarrington’s exemplary wines can be found on a thoroughly impressive collection of Vic’s top restaurant wine lists.

Join us for a taste of these two fantastic wineries on the 14th of November from 5pm – 7pm, when we will be exploring both Hochkirch and Tarrington as part of our Wine Program.

CRAWFORD RIVER

Presiding over gently undulating grazing lands with sprawling forests in the distance, Crawford River has paved the way for the industry in what is traditionally a wool, beef and dairy region. The winery atop the hill and the vineyard hugging the slope nestled in the midst of a large sheep and cattle station that John’s great-grandfather settled in 1884.

A relatively new operation at just 44 years old, Crawford River’s vineyards are maintained without the use of herbicides or insecticides. In addition, all picking, pruning, leaf-plucking and shoot thinning are done by hand. It is this meticulous attention to detail that sees the winery producing some of the best Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon in the region. You’ll also find smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc on site.

All Crawford River wines are crafted exclusively from hand-picked, hand-selected fruit grown at the estate vineyard, whereupon they are vinified and bottled on site. The minimal interference and movement during vinification allows the fruit to naturally express the special terroir of the region.

Crawford River Wines will be joining us for our Wine Program on the 28th November from 5pm – 7pm. Our Wine Program is free and open to wine lovers of all experience and knowledge.

All the makers listed above will be joining us at Edwin throughout the month to discuss their approach to wine-making, and to give you a taste of their range.
The Yarra Valley is considered the birthplace of Victoria’s wine industry, with a history going back 170 years. The first vines were planted in 1838, with a boom in the 1860s and 1870s. The demand for fortified wine saw the production of wine in the Yarra Valley pause in 1921, with a second wave of planting occurring in the late 1960s.

As one of Australia’s foremost cool climate regions, the Yarra Valley is known for producing classic styles in a range of varieties. It is now also home to new, exciting breed of revolutionary winemakers. We see the makers of this region pushing the boundaries of growing and producing, while respecting the traditions of this beautiful region.

A slice of food and wine paradise, the Yarra Valley is home to some of our favourite wineries in the state. If you can’t visit to enjoy the Yarra Valley itself, why not join us at Edwin for a taste of the region?

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THIS REGION?

The Yarra Valley is known for classic varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and these have been joined in recent years by a selection of emerging varieties. Nebbiolo, Arneis, Gamay and Gruner Veltliner are all showing great promise.

All of this makes for a very exciting future for one of Australia’s most historic wine regions.

EDWIN’S WINE CLUB: In October, we’ll be exploring the wines of the Yarra Valley region, sampling some of the region’s finest each Thursday night.

Situated just 45 kilometers east of Melbourne’s CBD, the Yarra Valley is cool in relation to other grape growing areas. With deep and fertile soil, some of Australia’s most beloved wineries are located within this region.

GIANT STEPS WINERY
www.giantsteps.com.au

Known for delivering some of the country’s most consistent varietal wines, Giant Steps uses indigenous yeasts, gravity-flow techniques and minimal filtration to produce highly expressive wines that are true to climate.

GOODMAN WINES
www.goodmanwines.com

Winemaker Kate Goodman creates wines that she herself loves to drink. A personal journey that began nearly three decades ago, establishing her own winery in 2012 has allowed Kate to express her passion for bringing people together.

While chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon are the hallmark varieties of Goodman Wines, Italian classics vermentino and negroamaro are also created, using grapes grown in the Heathcote region. The result is a range of wines, designed to be shared.

TARRAWARRA ESTATE

www.tarrawarra.com.au

With vineyards spanning an impressive 28 hectares on a property that occupies 400 hectares of land, TarraWarra Estate produces some of Victoria’s most loved wines.

Think TarraWarra for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All wines are meticulously grown, handpicked, vinified and aged on site. A vineyard restructure has seen newer varieties and clones of chardonnay, to sit alongside their single-block heritage varietals and blends.

YARRA YERING

www.yarrayering.com

Established in 1969, Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. With an international reputation for quality wines, Yarra Yering is frequently named when discussion turns to the top wineries in the region.

Planted in 1969, the unirrigated vines at the Yarra Yering vineyard produce elegant, complex and powerful wines. With good drainage, all day exposure to the sun, and enough elevation from the valley floor to avoid the spring frosts, the result is wines that are inherently balanced, precise and elegant.

All the makers listed above will be joining us at Edwin throughout the month to discuss their approach to winemaking, and to give you a taste of their range. Make sure you’re signed up to our Wine Club for more information. You can sign up HERE.
